After Amy Svetlick’s daughter Laney graduated high school, the two searched for meaningful, community-oriented ways to spend their days together. Laney has a developmental disability, and the pair wanted a reliable volunteer space where they could feel welcome and do some good. They found it at Mid-Ohio Food Collective.
“It was just so simple to sign up and get started,” said Amy. “And what an added benefit it is to know we’re also helping people.”
When they began volunteering at MOFC in November 2023, Laney quickly discovered she didn’t want to stop. Soon, it was their new normal. Now, twice a week, Amy and Laney stock coolers, bag produce, and organize shelves at the Mid-Ohio Market at Gantz Road in Grove City.
Laney said she has grown to love the supportive environment at the market, adding that the team “feels like family” now. Amy added that everyone makes Laney feel welcome and helps her with bigger tasks. They’ve made many friends working at the market.
The regular volunteer shifts have led to some lasting memories, too. Laney cherishes the apron she received as an award at last year’s MOFC Volunteer Celebration. “She has a really big sense of accomplishment,” said Amy.
Amy and Laney encourage people to give time when they can. To them, volunteering is something to look forward to that brings them closer together.
“Volunteering’s not an obligation,” Amy said. “It’s a reward in itself. You just feel good!”
MOFC needs about 1,000 volunteers every week. If you’re interested in volunteering with your friends, family, or workplace, visit mofc.org/get-involved/volunteer to browse opportunities and schedule your shift.
